To bring up the latest version of a module (and flush out an earlier version) it may be necessary to reload or refresh a page.

Server Consolidation

We recently moved all our domains to a single server.

Now, and
are all directed to one server location.

In past years when servers weren't reliable up to three servers with different domain names were used to make sure one was always available.

In recent years server reliability has become almost 100%, so maintaining backup sites no longer seems necessary.

Earlier Updates

In late March 2014 we increased the type size and line spacing in the modules to accommodate the growing number of people that are using mobile devices.

In early 2014 we condensed sections, added sections to explain new developments, eliminated some tangential social annotates, fixed writing problems, broke some sections into additional paragraphs*, and rewrote sentences in the interest of clarity.

Several hundred changes -- most minor, some major -- were made.

At this point all modules should carry a 2014 date in the upper right side of the initial pages. (If not, consider refreshing the page to flush out an older version.)

Among the major changes:

  • We have drastically condensed the module on digital audio (42b) to eliminate many technical points.
  • The module on single-camera production (62) has been expanded to more thoroughly cover film and video differences. 
  • The modules on TV news (63, 63-b and 64) have been condensed by deleting ancillary information.
  • The modules on careers (68 and 69) have been revised and expanded to take into consideration the latest research.

Internet Explorer Problem

With each Internet Explorer update some people have  encountered problems with our Java menu system -- problems that are not present with the Firefox, Safari, or Chrome browsers.

However, from what we can tell as of this writing, the prerelease browser associated with Windows 10, doesn't have any of these problems.

Answer Tips

(These may not work with all browsers.)

To bring up the definition of a term that your cursor is on, simply double click it.

A separate window should pop up with numerous options for that word, including how to pronounce it.  This has now been tested on with both Apple and Windows machines.

Mobile Device Issues

Computers without a mouse such as iPads can't use the click and drag feature required for the quick quizzes.

Some smart-phones have problems with the JavaScript features -- primarily the pop-up information and AnswerTips.

At the same time, all of the features in the modules should work with standard browsers as long as Java is not turned off.

In recent years the browsers in mobile devices have improved so we no longer have special versions of the modules for mobile devices.


YouTube™ Videos

We are now including links to a few strictly supplemental videos from YouTube™.

At the same time we know that some schools block YouTube and external links because of what they see as inappropriate content.

NOTES: Although information on this site is carefully checked for accuracy, occasionally a reader will take exception to something that's said.

Plus, with each update writing or upload errors may be introduced.  If an error is brought to our attention we will quickly fix it. Just let us know.

Pop-Up Information (▲ )

Because of rendering inconsistencies in the Internet Explorer 8 browser we have had to change the way of indicating ▲ pop-up information. Phrases in blue or red proceeded by the black triangle seen above can be moused over for elaboration.

Key terms are still in red.  (If you are using a standard browser, you should get a pop-up by mousing over the phrase in blue above.)  Some pop-ups will also have an image, such as ▲ this one.

If you find that some of the interactive features on this site don't work, you may be using an old browser or you have Java disabled.

cybercollege forum In addition to the Forum, which covers numerous media topics, there is also the author's blog with personal observations.

The instructor information has been greatly expanded and includes "Teaching Tips and Talking Points" for each of the modules. The URL for these and the supplementary tests is available to qualified instructors by writing the author.

Animation Issue

Some animated birdfirewalls, such as ZoneAlarm, have an option to shut off animated images. This will affect some illustrations on this site. (The dove on the left should appear to be flying—although not necessarily getting anywhere.)



The Quick Quizzes

The interactive Quick Quizzes require Java.  When you click on Quick Quiz at the bottom of the modules you should see two rows of blocks.

With the help of the left key of a mouse you can drag the blocks on the right to the matching phrases on the left.

There are links within some modules for additional reading. Among the specialized sections that have recently been added.

Color-Coding Scheme

Although many people go through these modules on an individual basis—government employees, TV crew members, military personnel, etc.— a great many users are in classrooms.

 To try to accommodate a greater range of needs, we've devised a color code for links.

The required reading links are marked with a green square ( -- ) These are covered in the interactive tests and puzzles.

A yellow square ( -- ) in front of link  indicates background reading. This material is not included on the interactive tests, although it may help in understanding the concepts covered.

A blue square in front of a link ( - ) indicates technical information. This type of information is designed for advanced classes and professionals; and, again, this may or may not be required by an instructor.

A red square is reserved for ( - ) external links that have related information. This information is not included on the interactive tests. CyberCollege and the InternetCampus have no control over the content or availability of these external links.

Links that are not marked with a colored square should be self-explanatory.

In summary:

This whole project is considered a collaborative effort and it has come a long way since the first rough draft was posted almost 20 years ago.

The text materials and illustrations continue to be updated on a regular basis as new information is published in trades, newspapers, and on the Internet. The date at the top-right of each module indicates when the material was last updated.

These materials are free and we aren't in the business of selling anything.

  • We've gotten reports that the materials are being used in for-profit courses.

    Although it could be considered flattering that some people feel they can charge for what is provided here free, it violates our legal agreements and threatens the continued availability of these materials.

    Therefore, to protect the availability of these materials we would appreciate it if instances of this type of copyright infringement are brought to our attention.

    * Some may think that the USA Today style of paragraphing which we've adopted is a bit much. However, with apologies to English teachers, it's been shown that breaking sections into more paragraphs is easier for students to read.
