These photos illustrate some additional concepts.


Depth is added to a scene by having objects in the foreground. Note in the photo above that the foreground object also frames the central subject matter.

Patterns are interesting and pleasing to look at. Ideally, they should also set the scene and supply a visual context for the story.



Geometric patterns add interest and often represent leading lines.

An odd number of prime objects (one, three, or five) is generally stronger than an even number, at least until the total number of objects exceeds six or more.

Two prime objects can divide composition. The exception is when the two elements are tied together in some way, as shown below.
